Top Five Paleo Restaurants in San Francisco

We see the benefits of a Paleo diet on a daily basis with our clients and ourselves (learn more about Paleo with our post 15 Health Benefits of the Paleo Diet According to Science), but having a dietary restriction can sometimes create a struggle. Luckily we live in a progressive food city and there are Paleo-esque options around every corner. We’ve chosen five restaurants with excellent Paleo-inspired options that will please even your non-Paleo friends.

Amawele’s South African Kitchen

Amawele is a Zulu word that translates to twins. The owners of Amawele’s South African Kitchen, identical twins Pam and Wendy, take pride in sharing their authentic South African cuisine. One of the most popular and sinfully delicious Paleo-friendly dishes is the Cape Malay Quinoa with Bobotie, a traditional spiced rice served Bobotie-style – with ground beef sautéed in spices and fruit. Amawele’s South African Kitchen is located at 101 Spear Street in San Francisco.

Built in an old boiler room of a tin can manufacturing plant, Serpentine focuses on locally-sourced American fare. They have a wide range of dishes that work on a Paleo diet. From their appetizers of a kale and avocado salad or the pork albondigas, to their main courses of pan seared Alaskan halibut or their grilled skirt steak, Serpentine always delivers beautiful food with a high impact.  You’ll want to have your phone ready to post photos to Instagram! Serpentine is located at 2495 3rd Street (at 22nd in Dogwatch) in San Francisco.

Prather Ranch Meat Co., American Eatery

Living in San Francisco, Prather Ranch Meat Co. is a familiar site, from their retail locations to American Eatery, they’re practically a household name. While their Paleo bowl, full of meat, greens, and cauliflower rice, is a solid Paleo option, it’s about their new Paleo burger – you’ll want to sink your teeth into this one! They also have delivery available with Caviar. Prather Ranch Meat Co., American Eatery is in the Ferry Building, Shop No. 33, in San Francisco.

Limón Rotisserie

Another San Francisco staple, Limón Rotisserie expanded their reach with a food truck all the while delivering the best quality vibrant Peruvian cuisine. A Paleo goldmine, their menu is plentiful from salads and ceviches for appetizers to main dishes like the beef heart, Hangar steak, or the mouth-watering El Pollo a la Brasa. You can’t go wrong. Limón Rotisserie has two locations in the city and one in Burlingame.  Our favorite, of course, is close to our gym, Limón Rotisserie at 524 Valencia Avenue in San Francisco.

Hog & Rocks

Touted by local publications as the Best Cocktail Bar, one of The 19 Best Places to Drink Outside, one of the 12 Best Things to Eat and Drink This Summer in the SF Bay Area, and also noted as having one of The Chronicle’s Rising Star Chefs, Hog & Rocks is another neighborhood favorite. But don’t let the kudos for drinks mislead you, their food is delectable and, of course, a Paleo dream. Dreams do come true, though, by way of the Charred Spanish Octopus with ‘Nduja, asparagus, hearts of palm, romesco, and squid ink vinaigrette. Hog & Rocks is located at 3431 19th Street (between Mission and Valencia), in San Francisco.

In retrospect, we could’ve called this the Top Five Restaurants in San Francisco because Paleo or not, the restaurants and food we’ve featured are the best, bon appetit!
