Eat Healthy with Your Kids

Take time to eat healthy with your kids and you’ll change their eating habits and health for the rest of their life. Kids live what they learn at home and appreciate the food that Mom served. The way they eat is determined by the food they eat now. If you’re trying to lose weight, chances are you’ve been cooking wrong and eating the wrong foods. There’s no need to make two meals, one for the family and one for yourself. You can start to help everyone eat healthier.

Learn creative ways to make fresh food more fun.

Does your child like a snack when he or she first comes home from school. Have fruit and cheese bits on a mini kabob ready when the child walks through the door. Dip makes every vegetable taste better and if you make it with cottage cheese, rather than sour cream, it contains far fewer calories and tastes just as good. There’s plenty of healthy snacks you can make that both you and the kids will love.

Have a creative cooking night.

If you have older children, you can have them search for healthy recipes for the “family cook-together.” Those with younger children can find easy to make recipes that are fun and healthy. Your child will appreciate the food even more when he or she made it with your help. Have a Hawaiian luau or sit on the floor for a Japanese meal. Making healthier foods more fun can be memories your children will cherish for years to come.

Steer clear of fast food restaurants for a while.

Even though you may be tempted to stop at Burger Quickie, hold off for a while and let your children develop a taste for healthier foods. Find places that offer salad and healthier foods or opt for a pizza, which you can top with lots of veggies. Better yet, make a pizza at home. There are a number of “kits” to make your own pizza, but it’s far more fun to do it from scratch. This is great if you have a garden and use your own tomatoes to make sauce or make the sauce when tomatoes are plentiful. You’ll be amazed at how easy it is. You can make it ahead and the night before pizza night, make your dough for the crust. Next make sure you have plenty of healthy options for toppings and let the kids have fun making their own sections on the pizza.

If you have a weight problem, the chances that they already learned poor eating habits is great, but it’s never too late to help your family change.

Eliminate unhealthy foods from the house, but do make certain you have healthy snacks readily available. The kids will eat these out of desperation and soon develop good habits.

You can have treats, such as popcorn, but use seasoning and salt rather than gobs of butter to flavor it.

Make it a habit to take a walk after dinner or dance while you’re cooking it. Any activity you share with your kids is just one more way of keeping you and them active.
