Benefits of Holistic Wellness

Have you ever considered what the word disease really means? Dis is a prefix meaning away from, lacking or apart from. Ease, the root word, means being comfortable or free from pain. When you combine these together, disease means lack of freedom from comfort or pain. One of the benefits of holistic wellness is to address disease from a causal approach, rather than treating just the symptoms, which is often how modern medicine approaches health.

When you feed your body what it was meant to eat, you’ll be healthier.

Too often we glut ourselves on man made concoctions that have no nutrients but plenty of calories. Some of these are actually toxic to our system. To make matters worse, in the name of progress, foods are now grown differently. Many of today’s food products contain less nutrients than they did just 20 years ago. They also may contain high amounts of pesticide if you don’t use organic foods. GMO products are invading the marketplace too. Foods lacking important nutrients or those that reek havoc on the body need to be replaced with healthy whole foods that provide much needed nourishment and energy. Only then can you start on the road to true wellness.

Get your body moving to make it stronger and stimulate the production of antioxidants, while also lengthening telomeres.

Exercise plays a huge role in good health. While it burns calories, it also has many more benefits for your body. Exercise keeps your supple and flexible, which protects your joints, tendons and muscles. It lengthens telomeres that protect the cells and stimulates the brain to create antioxidants. Exercise also increases blood circulation to help remove toxins and feed cells. It gives you strength and endurance as it burns off hormones from stress and replaces them with ones that create a sense of well being.

Stress can destroy the body.

Learning to deal with stressful situations before the body starts the flight or fight reaction can lead to good health and mental well being. The fight or flight response was extremely important when it occurred because of a predator, but today traffic jams, angry bosses and crying babies can trigger it. Learning to calm your mind when stressful situations occur can reduce the potential of illness and disease.

Getting adequate sleep is another important part of holistic wellness. When you sleep, your body has time to heal itself. Lack of sleep for long periods can lead to serious heart conditions, high blood pressure, diabetes and other health problems.

Everyday lifestyle choices dictate 53 percent of the key factors for good health with medical care only dictating 10 percent and genetics another 18 percent. That means you can change your health for the better most of the time by the decisions you make each day.

Getting pleasure from social interaction, employment and creative or mental activities can renew your energy and improve your overall sense of well-being.
