6 Tips for a Healthy 4th of July

The 4th of July is meant to be celebrated, but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your beach bod in the process. These 6 tips will help you navigate the BBQ and stay healthy during the holiday.

1. Get a Workout In!

Before you fire up the grill, fire up your buns! Come join us for morning Boost and Semi classes at Ascend Body at 9am and 10am. Coaches Mike and Leslie are planning something special, and don’t forget to wear your red, white and blue – special prize to the best dressed! Or go for a jog, stretch it out during yoga class, or hit the gym. Anything that gets you sweaty is key. Try to plan your workout for the morning, so you can spend the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying time with your friends and family!

2. Take it Easy with the Booze

We’re not saying to skip drinks altogether, but alcohol can pack a pretty calorific punch. So instead of guzzling down margarita- which can contain up to 900 calories- try these healthy summer cocktails. Or, if you’re feeling especially saintly, try drinking soda water with cranberry instead, no one will know the difference and it’ll ease that social aspect of having something in your hand. And remember that booze flood gate, once it starts to flow it’s that much easier to start indulging in more and more calories.

3. Use Smaller Plates

Research has proven that using smaller plates and utensils leads people to eat smaller portion sizes. Like everything in life, enjoying the 4th of July is all about moderation. Instead of making certain foods off limits, just control the portions!

4. Bring the Healthy Hors D’Oeuvres

Not sure there will be healthy options at the BBQ? Be the one to bring them! Skip the chips and dip and save your calories for the main course. Instead, snack on berries, hummus and sliced veggies, or fresh watermelon.

5. Nice Buns

BBQs are all about the burgers, and we would never ask you to skip the meat. But how about using a healthier bun? Try a gluten free option and skip the nasty inflammation, or wrap that baby up in lettuce. It’ll still taste just as good.

6. Marinade it Baby

The secret to delicious meat is an awesome marinade. Luckily, Marvin’s got you covered with his awesome peanut butter honey chicken marinade! It’s full of healthy fats, B vitamins and zinc and potassium. Plus, it tastes pretty darn tasty. Try it out!
